Is your heating system balanced?

We all know the importance of bleeding radiators to ensure they are able to heat up fully, but an unbalanced heating system can cause your home to heat up in a way that can make it uncomfortable while costing you more money.

Take the example of an unbalanced system where the upstairs radiators heat up faster than the downstairs ones, making it feel cool downstairs, so you turn up the thermostat to compensate. The downside of this is that it will then get uncomfortably warm upstairs, and you’re using more gas, and therefore spending more, to do this.

If you notice such a stark difference in temperatures between rooms, your heating system is probably unbalanced, but you could also check whether some radiators are getting hotter, or getting hotter faster, than others.

What causes this effect?

It could be that there is debris and sludge clogging up some radiators and preventing them from heating up efficiently, or a radiator being removed during decorating could have upset the balance. It may also be the case that the thermostatic radiator valves have been set incorrectly.

Xgas can dispatch heating engineers to Wrexham and other nearby locations like Chester and Oswestry to check your system. This may involve checking the flow differential and temperature to ensure your system is balanced and the condensing boiler is working efficiently. Restoring the balance may involve draining and refilling the system, but Xgas engineers can also give your system a powerflush if needed to remove sludge and residues from it.
