National Grid expands flexibility reward scheme

The National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) has recently announced its plans to expand the Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) into a year-round scheme.

The DFS was first introduced as an initiative aimed at mitigating peak demand during winter. It rewards customers with smart meters for not using power when the grid is expected to be under heavy load.

Under the ESO’s new strategy, the scheme will become a year-round initiative to ensure grid stability. The new scheme will also have elements of competition, so providers will be able to offer benefits to customers by combining the scheme with other offerings.

Octopus Energy’s Global Director of Flexibility, Alex Schoch, said about the development:

“The chance for households to earn hundreds of pounds, simply by reducing their energy use, will be welcome news to families having it tough right now. It’s great to see the system operator now recognises the role consumers can play in balancing the grid all year-round.”

He added that Octopus would be working to put money back into the pockets of energy consumers by expanding its services to encourage use when renewable energy is most plentiful.

Managing electricity consumption is one way to save money, but a large portion of annual energy bills goes into heating homes during the colder months, so having an efficient gas boiler is important.

Xgas can provide heating engineers in Chester to service your boiler to ensure it’ll work reliably and efficiently, as well as replace older boilers with a modern condensing equivalent. Get in touch to learn more.
