All gas, oil and liquid petroleum gas (LPG) boilers burn fuel to heat water that is then pumped around your central heating system to warm up your home. The efficiency of a boiler is essentially the proportion of the combusted energy that actually gets used for heating. Boilers installed prior to 2005 typically have an efficiency of about 70% or maybe even less, meaning that almost a third of the energy is escaping through the flue.
To minimise this energy loss, modern condensing boilers direct the combustion gases through a heat exchanger, transferring much of its thermal energy to the water before it is heated in the main chamber. As the water flow is now warmer than it otherwise would be, less gas needs to be burned to get the output flow to the desired temperature, such that the boiler efficiency can exceed 90% depending on the operating conditions. This means less gas needs to be combusted to achieve the same effect, saving you money and reducing the boiler’s carbon emissions. Even those who need to use oil and LPG boilers can now benefit from similar levels of efficiency.
