You may have heard about the potential introduction of hydrogen-ready boilers, but is it really worth getting one? Here are the facts.
The UK Government is considering introducing hydrogen, a clean-burning fuel, into the gas supply, initially at a blend of up to 20% to cut the carbon emissions associated with heating the country’s homes. A hydrogen-ready boiler is capable of being fuelled from everything from 100% natural gas to 100% hydrogen. While this may sound like a good bit of future proofing, converting the gas network to pure hydrogen is currently a distinct prospect. Given that a typical boiler has a serviceable life of 10-15 years, you are very unlikely to see a boiler purchased now run on pure hydrogen.
The good news, however, is that most modern condensing boilers, including any installed today, are capable of running on the blend of 80% natural gas and 20% hydrogen that could be introduced at some point in the near future. If your boiler is less than 10 years old and still working fine, you can probably get some more use out of it with regular servicing.
If your boiler is older and perhaps starting to show signs of failing, you may want to update it anyway. In addition to avoiding costly repairs, you’ll benefit from the improved efficiency of a modern boiler, which will save you money on your heating bills.
