Over time, sludge, dirt and other debris can accumulate in your central heating system’s radiators, compromising the performance of your heating units. The contamination can also have consequences for the life expectancy of your boiler.
Powerflushing is a way of correcting this issue. When a system is professionally powerflushed, the sludge is agitated by flushing the system’s water in different directions, with special chemicals also helping to break down the sludge so it can be easily removed.
How do you know when a powerflush is needed?
One clear indicator is the presence of dirty black or brown water when you bleed your radiators, as well as when water doesn’t come out at all. You may also notice that certain radiators take longer to warm up, and there may be cooler areas on a radiator, such as a cold strip along the bottom, where sludge is preventing the flow of warm water to that area. There may also be unusually loud noises coming from your radiators or boiler.
The build up of contamination in your system may also be affecting your gas boiler’s functions. For example, a boiler needing to be frequently restarted or even breaking down may be a sign that your system needs powerflushing. You may also notice water leaking from radiators or pipes.
