You may have heard that oil and gas boilers for central heating systems are to be banned by the UK Government. Here are the facts, so you can make an informed decision about your choice of heating system.
The two most important things to remember is that the ban does not come into effect until 2035, and even when it does come into force, it only affects the installation of new gas boilers. In other words, no one is going to make you remove your existing gas boiler, so a boiler fitted now will be allowed to last for its serviceable life, which can be 15 years or more if regularly serviced. By this time, low-carbon alternative technologies should have matured somewhat.
In an announcement in September, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the 2035 ban on gas boilers would remain, but he did announce a change for oil and LPG boilers, which are popular options for properties without a connection to the gas grid. They were originally going to be phased out from 2026, but this has now been put back to 2035 in line with gas boilers. Furthermore, there will be exemptions in place after the ban for properties where it would be challenging to switch to a low-carbon alternative, such as those that need extensive retrofitting or lack a grid connection.
