If you’re considering switching from a traditional boiler to a combi boiler, you may have some concerns. Here are the answers to some common questions about combi boilers.
How much does it cost to install a combination boiler?
The cost of a new combi boiler and its installation will typically be a four-figure sum, but the exact cost will vary depending on the circumstances.
For example, a one-bedroom flat will likely manage on a much less powerful boiler than a four-bedroom house, and there may also be regional differences in terms of the labour costs. Installations can also have varying degrees of complexity involved, which is why it’s usually best to consult with a professional.
How much does a combi boiler service cost?
You can expect to pay around £100 to service a combi boiler, depending on who does it, but this is money well spent. Not only will it help to ensure that your boiler continues to run safely, reliably and efficiently, but it’s also a requirement of the warranty for many boilers.
Can I install a combi boiler myself?
Unless you happen to be a Gas Safe registered engineer, you should never install a combi boiler yourself. A boiler installation involves working with gas and water pipes and electrical connections, and a lot can go wrong when a boiler is installed by a novice.
The biggest potential danger is the safety aspect. If a faulty installation leads to a gas leak, it can cause a fire and maybe an explosion. In addition, it could cause a leak of carbon monoxide, which is an odourless gas that can be harmful and even fatal for people.
On a practical note, a DIY installation may void the warranty of your boiler, and it may fail to meet necessary building regulations, which could open you up to legal ramifications.
Finally, an inadequately installed boiler may not perform optimally, meaning it costs more to run and is potentially more prone to breaking down.
Can a plumber install a combi boiler?
Plumbers can install combi boilers, but only if they’re also registered Gas Safe engineers. These engineers are specifically trained and qualified in working with gas appliances, so you know they are going to follow strict standards in their work to ensure a safe installation. If you have any doubts about your chosen engineer, ask to see his or her qualifications.
Can a combi boiler go on an inside wall?
Yes, a combi boiler can be fitted on an internal wall as long as that wall will be strong enough to hold it when it’s filled with water. Nevertheless, there may be some practical concerns about how the flue can pass to the outside, through either the roof or an external wall. Your installation engineer will be able to work with you in identifying the most practical location to install the boiler.
Do you need new pipework for a combi boiler?
Depending on your current setup, you may need some changes to your pipework. For example, 15mm diameter pipes were often used in the past to connect older boilers to the gas mains. These are unfortunately not suitable for combi boilers because they need a lot of gas in a short period to provide instant heating and hot water on demand.
Consequently, Gas Safe requires that the pipes supplying gas to a combi boiler must be at least 22mm in diameter, and they may need to be thicker still if the gas is travelling a long distance or around bends. As usual, your Gas Safe registered engineer will be able to advise you about whether your gas pipes need replacing and how thick they will need to be.
The pipework for the central heating will generally not need replacing, although some adjustments will need to be made to the hot water pipes. It can be beneficial for your installer to also powerflush the heating system before connecting the new boiler to ensure that any sludge is removed from the system and water can circulate freely.
