Boiler maker urges legislation to prevent unsafe gas work

ATAG Heating Technology, which makes gas boilers, has called for new restrictions after it was found that many professionals are correcting unsafe installations by unqualified individuals.

ATAG director Kevin Treanor said that unqualified individuals were responsible for as many as 250,000 gas-related jobs every year. He pointed out that two-thirds of such work had been found to be unsafe by the Gas Safe Register, adding:

“…and our engineers routinely uncover dangerously installed systems that could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, fires, or even explosions. The fact that over half of installers are never asked to show ID when attending a job shows just how vulnerable the current system is.”

He stressed that the public needed to be urgently protected by bringing in stronger safeguards to assure professional standards. ATAG is therefore urging people to add their signature to a letter for their MPs asking for legislation to limit sales of boilers to Gas Safe registered installers. Operatives should also show their accreditation and identification before working in homes.

ATAG found that just under half of illegal work was advertised through social media, emphasising the importance of being wary of unusually cheap deals. In addition to jeopardising health and safety, unsafe installations may end up costing you more after correctional work.

Instead, Xgas can send qualified heating engineers to Oswestry, Chester and other locations around the Wrexham area. Get it touch to learn about boiler installations, services and upgrades, as well as how you can spread the cost of a new boiler with financing options.
