British Gas launch cheap energy scheme

Energy supplier British Gas has launched a new scheme that offers discounted electricity at periods in the day when there is an ample supply of renewable electricity.

Customers with smart meters on the PeakSave tariff currently get half-price electricity on Sundays. Some 600,000 customers have saved a total of £11 million so far, and with 11,799 MWh of energy consumption being shifted to Sunday, when greater renewable energy is typically available due to lower demand from industry and businesses, this has avoided about 326 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

To make further savings, PeakSave customers will also now be able to opt into PeakSave Green Flex events.

British Gas will forecast the likely effect of the events on the grid and the potential savings that could be made. It will then schedule the events accordingly and announce the 1–2 hour periods when customers will be able to benefit from half-price electricity, either on the morning of the event or the day before.

While customers will not need to alter their energy-consumption patterns, they will save more, as well as cut CO2 emissions, if they shift some energy-intensive activities, such as baking or doing the washing, to the event period.

While opportunities to make savings are always welcome, having a well-insulated home with an efficient heating system is vital to cutting heating costs. Xgas can provide a boiler service in Wrexham, Chester and other locations to ensure your boiler is working efficiently, as well as replace old, inefficient boilers with highly efficient modern condensing boilers.
