British Gas survey reveals poor awareness about gas safety

A survey commissioned by British Gas has revealed that many UK consumers could be better aware about gas safety.

Of the polled individuals, just over half (51%) said they felt adequately informed about dealing with a gas leak. Just under half (48%) reported feeling confident about turning off their mains gas supply if needed. The research was published to coincide with Gas Safety Week, an industry event to promote better gas safety through things like regular servicing.

An engineer at British Gas, Faye Lackey, said that the survey showed gaps in people’s confidence about gas safety. Nevertheless, people can use gas safely at home with some simple steps:

“An annual boiler service and gas appliances check is a quick job that can catch issues early and keep everything running smoothly. Regular checks will also help to prevent more serious issues, such as fires or carbon monoxide poisoning.”

Despite this, 16% of respondents reported never having had their gas appliances professionally checked. Lackey also emphasised the critical importance of using only Gas Safe Registered engineers to work on gas appliances in your home. For those living in rented accommodation, the landlord should commission an annual check and provide tenants with a CP12 Gas Safety Certificate.

While safety checks are not compulsory for private homeowners, an annual service is critical to catch potential safety issues, as well as help boilers to run reliably and efficiently. Contact Xgas for a boiler service in the Wrexham or Chester area, possibly as part of a wider care plan.
