British Gas warns households to check boilers

A survey by British Gas revealed that around half of households don’t check their boiler’s health and a third say they never think about their boiler unless it has a problem.

If boiler issues are not spotted early, it could lead to costly repairs. Almost half (49.8%) of those surveyed admitted that they don’t know how to do a boiler check.

Specialists in boiler maintenance suggest an annual service by a boiler expert will reveal any problems that need immediate fixing, but there are some simple heating checks that households can do. Turn on all radiators and ensure they are heating up to the expected temperature. Bleed the radiators if they are hot at the bottom but cold at the top. Use a bleed key and a cloth for this when the radiator is switched off and cold.

Check that there are no water leaks anywhere in the heating system. Look at the boiler pressure indicator, which should be between 1 and 2 bars. Sometimes this is marked on the boiler as a red or green zone, with the red zone indicating a problem.

If the boiler keeps going out, there is more than usual condensation on the windows or there are dark stains around the boiler, this could indicate a carbon monoxide leak. If this is the case open the windows and immediately, call your plumber or boiler expert for assistance.
