The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has come to an agreement with boiler makers about how they market their products in relation to hydrogen potentially being blended with the gas supply in future.
While no boiler manufacturer is making any false claims about hydrogen readiness, the CMA was concerned that claiming that a boiler is hydrogen-ready would imply that other boilers are not, whereas in reality all boilers on the market, and many installed in homes, can run on a 20% hydrogen blend. It was also concerned about hydrogen-ready boilers perhaps being mistakenly seen as a greener option.
The CMA’s interim senior director for consumer protection, Hayley Fletcher, said:
“With people increasingly concerned about their impact on the environment and the cost of bills, it is vital that consumers can make well-informed decisions. Our action including the changes secured from Worcester Bosch will help to ensure that consumers looking for a new heating system are provided with clear and accurate information.”
A Worcester Bosch spokesperson confirmed that it had cooperated with the CMA’s investigation and agreed to modify its marketing practices to allay the CMA’s concerns. The company will also coordinate with its network of retailers and installers to ensure their own marketing materials are consistent with the undertakings it has agreed with the CMA.
