EDF offers new discounted energy tariff

France-based energy supplier EDF has announced a new tariff that offers a £50 discount on the standing charges for dual-fuel customers.

Many have criticised Ofgem’s decision to set relatively high standing charges for its price cap because it disproportionately affects those who use less energy, and the new tariff goes someway to addressing this. The unit charges still track Ofgem’s price cap, so the new deal is essentially a flat £50 discount on your yearly bill.

The deal will appeal most to lower energy users. The MoneySavingExpert website suggests those paying up to £100 per month, with higher users likely being better off switching to a tariff with a discounted unit rate, perhaps with a price fix for certainty.

EDF’s director of retail, Rich Hughes, said that the price cap will likely go up again later in the year after coming down in July, adding:

“Our new tariff will guarantee that customers who have already cut back or made changes to improve energy efficiency will pay proportionately less. Standing charges have increased significantly over the previous couple of years, and this new tariff is another way we are helping customers save cash and carbon.”
