Energy efficiency of UK homes has improved

A UK government report has confirmed that there has been considerable progress towards achieving the government’s goal of most UK homes having an energy efficiency rating of C or above.

The “Energy Efficiency of UK Homes” report, published in December 2024, revealed that, in England in 2010, 12% of homes were in the C band or above, but by 2022 this percentage rose to 48%.

Energy efficiency is measured on a scale from A to G, with A being the most efficient. Most homes below C are older ones, with new homes typically achieving a higher rating. Better insulation can improve the energy efficiency of many older homes. Several schemes funded by the taxpayer or energy suppliers help lower-income households upgrade their homes’ energy efficiency.

The Energy Efficiency Obligation (ECO) is a scheme financed by an energy bill levy which helped 2.5 million homes from 2013 to Autumn 2024. However, the number of people helped each month by this scheme fell from 80,000 a month in early 2014 to an average of 20,000 a month between mid-2016 and mid-2020. This was due to less money available for the scheme when the government reduced the required energy bill levy to decrease energy bills.

Upgrading the energy efficiency of a home reduces energy bills. Also, the boiler needs to be working efficiently. An old energy inefficient boiler needs replacing. For a comprehensive boiler health check and service, ask Xgas to send one of their heating engineers to your Wrexham home.
