Expert suggests insulating hot water cylinder

MyBuilder.com’s Jack Coles has called on households to make sure their hot water cylinder is adequately insulated to help keep their bills down.

He explained that ensuring that the cylinder is insulated by:

“…a hot water cylinder jacket will help you save money on your bills. Without insulation your cylinder is effectively a huge radiator, dispersing the heat from within and using energy to keep reheating it. Many homes across the UK have uninsulated hot water tanks which allow heat to escape.”

Cylinder jackets can be bought for as little as around £20, and in return, you can save up to £200 on your annual energy bill. Even if you already have a jacket around your hot water cylinder, Jack says it’s worth checking it to make sure it’s still in good condition and thick enough. He suggests replacing it if it does not entirely cover the cylinder or is less than 75 mm thick.

Note that this advice does not apply if you have a combi boiler, because these systems heat water as and when it’s needed, so there is no need for a hot water cylinder.

Making sure your hot water cylinder is insulated is just one way to cut your energy use and, therefore, your bills. Other ways include installing thermostatic radiator valves to heat your home more intelligently and servicing your boiler to make sure it’s working efficiently.
