Expert warns about strange boiler noises

With the colder autumn weather coming upon us, you’ve probably turned on your heating, but what if it’s making strange noises?

The founder and CEO of a boiler company, Andy Kerr, said:

“If you’ve noticed your boiler making a noise that varies from how it usually sounds, it’s best to act fast to prevent further damage. A noisy boiler isn’t always a cause for concern, but there are certain noises to look out for, and each comes with its reasons and remedies.”

For example, if your boiler is making a whistling sound, it could be a symptom of kettling, where something is causing the water to reach boiling point. It could be due, for example, to a build-up of limescale or a faulty pump or thermostat. Knocking, tapping or clicking sounds, meanwhile, could be due to your boiler struggling to ignite. Banging noises may indicate another serious problem in the heating system, while buzzing sounds could be a symptom of a failing pump or other electrical component.

While there are things you can do yourself like bleed radiators and ensure there is sufficient water in the system, if your boiler is still making noises, it’s essentially asking for help. If in doubt, it’s better to seek professional help from a Gas Safe registered engineer, preferably sooner rather than later to avoid problems becoming more severe.
