Households urged to check boiler when moving

Anyone moving house has been urged to make sure their new home’s boiler is in good working order.

This time of year is historically popular for moving home. With so much to do, though, you might easily forget to make sure the new home’s boiler is working safely and efficiently. A fault in a boiler or other gas appliance can be potentially life threatening due to risks like carbon monoxide poisoning. Unlike when renting out a property, a homeowner is not obliged to perform a gas safety check when selling a property.

Leading boiler engineer Adam Knight said about this:

“Checking the gas safety of your new home should be right up there with changing the locks. You’d never drive a new car without checking it’s safe and has an MOT—so why would you move into a house without confirming the boiler’s not dangerous?”

On finding a property that interests you, he recommends asking the seller about the boiler, such as when it was installed and last serviced. If it’s been more than 12 months since it was serviced, he suggests negotiating a service as part of the sale. You should also ensure that any remaining warranty is transferred to you.

If you’ve already moved in and do not know if the boiler was serviced recently, you should get it serviced as soon as possible to ensure it’s working safely and efficiently. Contact Xgas to arrange a boiler service in Chester and other places around the Wrexham area, possibly as part of a care plan.
