A heating expert has urged households to make changes to their heating systems ahead of the colder seasons.
Gordon Wallis of Your NRG, a supplier of heating oil, suggested a range of changes recently. A simple alteration that costs nothing, for example, is to lower your thermostat settings by 1C. This could save £100 on the average annual bill without making a noticeable difference to comfort in most cases.
Another inexpensive step if you have a hot water cylinder is to invest about £15 in a new insulating jacket. Hanging heavy curtains and shoring up any draughts can also help keep heat in your home.
Changes to your heating system can be more expensive, but can still yield savings in the long run. Installing thermostatic radiator valves, for instance, can allow you to better control the temperature of individual rooms, so you’re wasting less heat. If you have a very old boiler, it may be well worth replacing it, as Wallis explains:
“Older boilers can be as little as 60% efficient, meaning 40% of your energy is wasted. Replacing it with a modern A-rated model could save up to £540 annually and reduce long-term strain on the system.”
Your central heating may be the last thing on your mind right now, but it’s an ideal time to have any upgrades done. Xgas can send its heating engineers to Chester and Wrexham area homes to install a modern condensing boiler and thermostatic radiator valves. Get in touch to also find out about our financing plans.
