UK households are being advised to move some energy consumption to off-peak times to avoid huge demand spikes during the hot summer days.
Ember, a global independent energy think-tank, estimated that the daily demand for electricity rose by 14% during the heatwaves in June and July. Combined with typical demand, this can put a lot of pressure on the grid and possibly lead to power cuts. Power plants may also work less efficiently during a heat wave, exacerbating the situation.
In the long term, planners will need to adapt the UK energy system in line with the changing climate. For now, Gareth Robertson, an expert in green energy, suggests changing some habits to relieve the pressure on the grid during peak times. The UK peak times for power consumption tend to be around 7–9 am in the morning when people prepare to leave the house, and 5-8 pm when they return.
While you may still need to put the oven on to make dinner, for example, some tasks can be put off. Robertson said about this:
“Instead of putting the washing on when you get home from work, consider delaying until later on in the evening, and rather than popping the dishwasher on straight after dinner, again it can be left until later on.”
