Gas boilers produce hot water that comes out of the taps and shower, and circulates around the radiators to heat the home. About 80% of British homes have a gas boiler, but not many owners have detailed knowledge of how they work.
The basic way a gas boiler operates is to heat water that is pumped around the house. A gas burner generates the heat, and a heat exchanger transfers the heat to the water. Control technology switches the gas burner on, and when the water reaches the required temperature, turns the burner off. Unlike a combi boiler, there is also a tank that stores hot water.
A gas boiler must have features that ensure its safe operation. Pressure release valves or diaphragm expansion vessels release excessive water pressure that could cause damage. Temperature control devices maintain the desired temperature and prevent the boiler from overheating. An exhaust pipe safely removes carbon monoxide fumes outside the house.
Flame devices detect if the gas flame goes out and automatically stop the boiler gas supply if the flame is unexpectedly extinguished.
Fortunately, you don’t have to know how a gas boiler works to enjoy the benefits of a warm home and plenty of hot water. All Xgas heating engineers at their Wrexham base have expert knowledge of how boilers work. During a boiler service, they check that everything in the boiler is working efficiently and safely. This means that any issues with the heating system can be fixed.
