How long does it take to fit a new boiler?

A common question when purchasing a new boiler is how long it will take to install. There is no one answer, as it depends on several factors.

The quickest installation is a straight swap, meaning replacing an old boiler with a new one of the same type and in the same location. This involves isolating and draining the system and disconnecting the power before removing the old boiler and fitting a new one. One engineer can do this in less than a day.

When replacing the same type of boiler but in a different location it will take at least a day, perhaps longer.

Changing the boiler type will typically take two to three days as this will also mean altering the plumbing and electrics. If changing from a combi boiler to a system one, a cylinder will need to be fitted. A heat-only boiler will also require a cold water tank and an expansion tank. If switching from a system boiler to a combi one, the unused cylinder may be removed, though it can be left in place.

If changing the fuel type, for instance from an oil fired boiler to a gas boiler, allow two to three days for fitting.

Changing both the type and position of a boiler will take several days, perhaps as long as four.
