How much is a new boiler in 2024?

No matter how well maintained, every boiler inevitably comes to the end of its serviceable life. There may also be reasons for replacing a boiler before that, however.

For example, the repair costs may be starting to mount up, and if you’ve just been given a very high quote for repairs, it might be cheaper in the long run to just get a new one. In addition, your boiler may still be working, but it’s struggling to meet your household needs, so it’s perhaps time to upgrade to a newer, more powerful one. Finally, if you’ve set your mind on moving your boiler, perhaps because it’s hard to access, you might want to consider replacing it at the same time if it’s already fairly old. This is especially pertinent because newer boilers tend to be smaller and more compact, so one may fit in a location that wouldn’t be possible with your old boiler.

What is more, older boilers can be much less efficient than modern condensing boilers. For example, if you have an old boiler that’s only 70% efficient, almost a third of the heat generated from burning gas is escaping out of the flue rather than going into the radiators to heat your home. In contrast, modern condensing boilers are 90+% efficient, so you need to burn substantially less gas to heat your home, saving you money on your energy bills.

The cost of a new boiler can vary a lot depending on the type of boiler, its capacity, its brand, the length of the warranty, and the nature of the installation. For example, many households may want a condensing boiler because it produces hot water on demand while also heating your home. In this case, you could expect to pay around £1,500 plus VAT for the boiler itself plus another £1,250 to £4,000 plus VAT, depending of course on your choice of boiler and the nature of the installation.

In larger homes with a higher number of occupants, a combi boiler may not be able to supply hot water fast enough to meet the needs of multiple bathrooms, so a traditional or system boiler may be a better choice. Both of these need a hot-water tank, but a traditional boiler also needs a cold-water tank. For a new traditional boiler, expect to pay £1250 plus VAT or more, while a new system boiler might cost upwards of £1,750 plus VAT. The installation cost will of course depend on the nature of the install. For example, if you’re replacing a combi boiler with a traditional boiler, you’ll need a hot- and cold-water tank to be fitted and the plumbing installed to connect them.

Not all homes are connected to the gas grid of course, so they need a different sort of boiler. An oil boiler burns heating oil from a storage tank to generate heat, while LPG boilers are fuelled by canisters of liquefied petroleum gas. Just like with gas boilers, you can get heat-only, system and combi variants of both these boiler types. For an oil boiler, these cost an average of £3650, £3925 and £3400, respectively, for both the boiler itself and the installation.

While you’re having your boiler replaced, you might want to consider replacing any old radiators. Compared to radiators that are 10 or more years old, a new radiator can be up to 50% more efficient, so it may be worth the £200 or so to replace each one. You could also consider getting your radiators powerflushed to remove any sludge that has built up or have thermostatic radiator valves installed in order to heat your home more intelligently.

It’s important to not try and save money by installing a boiler yourself. A boiler works with a combination of water, electricity, and gas, and only a Gas Safe registered engineer should install one. A botched installation can have consequences in terms of poor efficiency and reliability, but more importantly, it may not be safe. It may also invalidate the warranty on the boiler.

Xgas can send a gas engineer to Wrexham and other nearby locations like Oswestry and Chester to visit your home and assess your needs. Whatever kind of boiler you need, Xgas can provide and install it, as well as install a boiler you’ve already bought. It applies best industry practices and the latest tools and techniques to ensure a quality installation, and given that a new boiler is a substantial investment, offers various finance options to spread the cost.
