A water leak in gas-fuelled central heating, even a minor one, could cause inefficient heating that wastes energy and increases energy bills.
A leaking central heating system can cause structural damage to the home. If the leak is not obvious, there are some common indicators of a water leak to look out for.
Check the boiler pressure gauge. If it is below the standard 1 to 1.5 bar, there could be a leak. Also examine the areas around pipes, radiators and the boiler. If you spot damp patches or moisture, this could mean there is a leak.
If the boiler has a hissing sound instead of its usual hum, there is a chance of a leak and you should look to have the issue investigated as soon as possible.
If there is any rust or corrosion in the pipes, this may be a sign of a slow leak, even if you detect no dampness. A leak can cause air pockets in radiators that block the free flow of water, and a radiator that remains cold when the heating is turned on could contain an air pocket, indicating a leak.
At your annual boiler service in your Wrexham, Chester or Oswestry home, a heating engineer should make sure that there are no leaks.
If you know there is a leak or suspect there is one in the central heating, it’s recommended that you call Xgas, who will send out one of their Gas Safe registered engineers to fix the leak. Central heating systems are complex, so you should never attempt to fix the leak yourself.
