How to use less hot water at home and save money

A boiler often burns expensive fuel to keep the household supplied with hot water. If less hot water is used, this can lower both energy and water bills. There are a few simple ways to reduce hot water use, and we will look at a few of these in this blog.

An aerator costing around £10 fits on the end of a tap. It works by mixing air with water, so less water comes from the tap, but pressure is maintained.

A boiling hot water tap dispenses boiling water and uses about half the energy of boiling water in a kettle. Unlike kettles, these taps boil exactly the amount of water needed. As a bonus, some hot water taps also provide fizzy cold drinking water.

Another way of saving hot water is to use an eco-shower. These showers cut the water used for a five-minute shower from about 75 litres for a standard high-power shower to 45 litres.

Washing machines use a lot of hot water. If the machine has a half load setting it will use less hot water for smaller loads. Therefore, it is usually best to wait until there is a full load.

If the water coming from the taps is too hot, try turning the water temperature down. There is usually a button on the boiler to do this. Also, check that the boiler is running efficiently. An energy-efficient boiler uses less fuel when heating water. An Xgas engineer will check this for you at the annual boiler service in your Chester, Wrexham or Oswestry home.
