If your boiler breaks down, you could face a large repair bill. Boiler insurance cover helps pay for repairs, but do you need it?
A boiler insurance policy covers the call-out fee of a safety-registered engineer, repair, parts and labour. Cover may also include an annual boiler service.
Before purchasing insurance, check if your home insurance policy covers the boiler. If it does, cover may be limited. If you rent your home, the landlord is normally responsible for boiler repairs.
If you are considering buying the cheapest boiler policy, it may have less cover than you want. A basic insurance policy may only cover the boiler and not the central heating system. There may be a limit on the repair payout of around £1,500. A more expensive policy covers unlimited engineer callouts, but basic policies may have a restriction of two callouts a year. You should expect all policies to allow access to a 24-hour emergency helpline.
As in all insurance policies, some exclusions are not covered. These can include faulty taps and showers, boilers over a specified age, and faults caused by a non-authorised engineer. You may also have to pay an excess fee for any claims. If the boiler is not serviced annually, this could invalidate the policy.
