Methods of reducing costs of energy bills

Energy prices have risen by 6% as of April 1, 2025, causing many homeowners to struggle to pay their bills. Fortunately, several actions can be taken by those struggling to pay.

The first port of call for anyone looking to try and reduce their bill is to contact the energy supplier, who may help with a payment plan review, payment breaks, or access to hardship funds.

If you have a long-term health condition or are elderly, you could be classed as a vulnerable person and be entitled to extra help and support through the Priority Services Register at https://www.thepsr.co.uk/

Government support is available for insulation, boiler grants, cold weather payments and the warm home discount scheme. The Household Support Fund is run by local councils and provides grants for essential expenses, including heating.

There are several ways to lower energy bills. Local organisations run warm place schemes where people go to keep warm for a few hours and socialise with others whilst turning the home heating off.

If you are not paying by monthly direct debit, you may be able to save £100 a year on your bills by switching to this payment method. Furthermore, an Xgas boiler service in Chester or North Wales will check that your gas boiler is operating efficiently and not wasting energy.

Review all regular expenses including broadband, mobile, food and fuel. Research if you are getting the best deals on everything. By switching suppliers including the energy company, you may be able to save money to make energy bills more affordable.
