Steps to improve boiler efficiency

Energy prices are expected to go up in the autumn, but there are some steps you can take that may save you money without sacrificing your comfort.

It’s important to have your boiler serviced annually to maintain its efficiency in the long term. This will also have the benefit of reducing the chances of a breakdown, which typically happen when you need your heating the most.

Another way to save money can be to reduce the boiler flow temperature. According to Savanta and the Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA), some 54% of households have already done this. Nevertheless, many condensing boilers are still set to relatively high temperatures like 70°C, according to research from Nesta, and reducing this to 60°C could improve boiler efficiency. Research sponsored by the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) also revealed that further savings can be made by fitting a room thermostat that is compliant with the Boiler Plus standards.

Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) can also help reduce costs by heating less frequently used rooms, such as bedrooms, to a lower temperature. It’s important to ensure that air can circulate around them, however. Bleeding radiators and ensuring your system is balanced are also important for having an efficient heating system.

Xgas can provide heating engineers in Chester and other places around the Wrexham area to help you get the most out of your heating system, whether it’s servicing your boiler, installing TRVs or powerflushing to remove debris from your system. Get in touch to find out more.
