Survey reveals overconfidence about boiler installation

A new survey has revealed that one in 20 people in the UK believe they could install a boiler themselves successfully.

The shocking result comes from a poll involving 2,000 adults. It was commissioned by Gas Safe Register as part of Gas Safety Week to highlight the dangers of overconfidence when it comes to gas appliances. Needless to say, any gas work, including boiler installations, should always be performed by a suitably qualified and registered engineer.

DIY expert and television host Nick Knowles worked with Gas Safe Register on the campaign. He said that while confidence can be a good thing, there’s a time and a place for it, adding:

“Through my time presenting, I’ve seen many instances where that ‘do it yourself’ mentality has worked. But being overconfident with certain elements of home improvement—particularly when it comes to things like gas or electrical appliances—can be deadly, probably illegal, and should only be done by professionals.”

Gas Safe Register’s Rob Denmann also highlighted the dangers of the “give it a go” mindset when it comes to gas. He said such confidence was best suited to things like decorating or putting shelves up, with gas work left to the professionals. Over 130,000 engineers in the UK are Gas Safe registered and qualified to perform gas work safely and legally.
