The hidden boiler settings that can save you hundreds

Two hidden controls on a combi boiler could lower your annual energy bill by up to £325, according to a boiler expert.

Combi boilers that heat water and central heating usually have two temperature flow dials that adjust the water temperature entering the pipes. A common mistake that inexperienced boiler installers make is incorrectly setting these flow temperature controls by not changing them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This can cause the boiler to be inefficient and burn more fuel.

Setting the flow temperature to the correct settings can increase the boiler’s efficiency by around 15%, For a typical 24-kilowatt boiler that operates four hours a day, according to the latest Ofgem price cap this simple adjustment could save around £325 on the annual gas bill. The amount you save is also dependant on the age of the boiler, as older boilers will be less efficient.

Adjusting the flow temperature is easy on most combi boilers. Look for two flow dials, one for the water and the other for the heating, usually distinguished by a tap and a radiator icon. Check the manufacturer’s manual and make sure that the dials are set to the recommended temperature.

If you book an Xgas combi boiler service for your Chester home, an engineer will check the flow temperature to make sure it is set at the right level. They will also make any other adjustments or repairs that keep the boiler working efficiently so that you are not consuming more gas than you need to.
