The secret boiler button that could save £120

A button on your boiler that many do not know about could cut energy bills by around £120 a year.

The button in question alters the flow temperature of your boiler. It is located on the control panel and is usually a round button that can be turned, although sometimes there are plus and minus buttons that can be pressed. A combi boiler may have two flow dials, one for hot water and the other for heating. If you are not sure where the buttons are, consult your boiler manual.

If the flow temperature is reduced by 3 to 5 degrees, the boiler will work more efficiently and use less energy. This could reduce energy bills by about 10%, saving approximately £10 a month or £120 a year on the average home’s energy bill, according to a figure from green energy company Greenmatch.

Turning down the flow temperature decreases the temperature of the water coming out of the hot taps and circulating in the radiators of the heating system, but should still heat the home sufficiently to feel comfortable. If there is a hot water tank, make sure that the water temperature is above 60 degrees for safety reasons.

There is no need to alter the thermostat temperature if you want to save money by turning down the flow temperature. Energy prices are not expected to fall soon, so reducing bills is important in many households.

An annual boiler service in Chester, Oswestry or Wrexham by an Xgas engineer will check that it is running efficiently and not wasting valuable fuel.
