The gas supply network in Britain has been found to be suitable for supplying hydrogen in future according to a report from National Gas about a trial it conducted.
Using low-carbon hydrogen to replace natural gas is viewed as a potential means to reduce the country’s carbon emissions. If it were found to be feasible, the previous UK Government had planned to promote blending hydrogen with the natural gas supply at up to 20%. National Gas therefore ran a trial whereby it tested various hydrogen concentrations, from just 2% to pure hydrogen, through parts of the national transmission network that were previously operational. This first phase revealed no major challenges to using the existing network for transporting hydrogen, and a second phase will now look at using existing compressor stations for hydrogen.
National Gas CEO Jon Butterworth said about the trial:
“Today’s report presents a promising picture on hydrogen blending, which can help the government meet its ambition of making the country a clean energy superpower as we progress to 100% green hydrogen, and all while using our existing infrastructure.”
It’s important to note that any conversion to 100% hydrogen is some way off in an uncertain future. Should the current Government continue with the plan to blend the natural gas supply with up to 20% hydrogen, however, existing gas boilers will still function on the blended supply. Xgas can provide a modern boiler installation in Wrexham and other nearby towns and cities like Chester, so get in touch for a quote.
