The Energy Crisis Commission has warned in a report that the UK remains vulnerable to another energy price shock.
Launched earlier in the year, the commission was established to investigate how the energy crisis following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had affected businesses and households in the UK. It includes participants from representatives from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Citizens Advice and Energy UK. In addition to being reliant on volatile supply chains, it found the country’s demand was excessive due to poor energy efficiency in much of the housing stock.
Energy UK’s deputy chief executive, Dhara Vyas, said there was a degree of urgency with the report:
“Global instability was a major factor behind these price shocks so it’s sadly evident that we need to be better prepared for a repeat that can’t be ruled out. Ultimately, we need to prevent a repeat by cutting our dependence on volatile fossil fuels through investing in domestic clean power.”
She added that in addition to increasing the energy sourced from the UK, more needed to be done about using it efficiently, such as by taking radical action to reduce the amount wasted in homes. One of the best personal measures you can take to protect yourself from future price rises is to invest in heating your home more efficiently, such as by improving its insulation.
Xgas can also help with this by providing heating engineers in Chester to replace an old inefficient boiler with a modern condensing boiler and install thermostatic radiator valves, so you can heat your home more intelligently.
