Many households hide their boiler in a cupboard to keep it out of sight. Ideally, the only item in a boiler cupboard should be the boiler, but often it also becomes a place to store other things. However, this may not be a wise thing to do.
Engineers often find flammable items stored next to the boiler when servicing gas boilers. Items like linen, clothing, cleaning supplies, and paint tins in an enclosed space next to a boiler are a fire risk.
Some people even hang clothes over a boiler to dry them off. Items like jackets, coats or towels draped over a boiler are dangerous. When clothes are hung over a hook on the back of a boiler cupboard door, there is a risk of them falling off onto the boiler. Materials that cover a boiler can cause it to overheat and start a fire.
Clothes and linens piled up near a boiler, even if they are not in direct contact with it, may block airflow which can impair the functioning of the boiler. The area around a boiler should be clear. The boiler manual should specify safe clearance distances. If items are stored in a boiler cupboard, these should be at least 600 mm away from the boiler.
Regularly check that the boiler cupboard is clean and clutter free.
