A gas boiler burns gas, but cannot operate without electric power. If the power fails, you may lose access to hot water, and the central heating will not warm your home.
A boiler operating normally has an indicator light that shows there is electricity. If this light is off, it usually means there is an electrical fault.
Sometimes, this indicator light fails, making it appear that there is no electricity supply. Replacing the light can fix this.
The fuse system trips to prevent a power surge from damaging the boiler. It is a good idea to check the fuses, which could be located in the boiler or a nearby fuse switch, and also the main home fuse box. Reset or replace the fuse.
If the fuses trip again, there is probably an electrical fault. There may also be an internal boiler fuse, which will need replacing by a qualified engineer.
If the rest of the home is without electricity, then there is an electrical supply issue. If the neighbours also have no power, then you will have to wait for the power to be restored.
If the fuse has not tripped and there is an electrical supply in the home, you should call in a gas engineer who will check the boiler if it has no power. The boiler’s printed circuit board may have failed – in which case, it will need replacing.
