What’s the cheapest way to use central heating?

With the days getting shorter and colder, you’re probably finding you need the central heating on slightly more often.

Given that the Ofgem price cap has recently risen by 10%, however, you might be wondering what the most efficient way is to use your heating.

The first thing that determines your heating bill is the temperature. It takes more gas to get to a higher temperature, and your home will lose heat slightly faster, so it also takes more gas to keep it at that temperature. If you can turn your thermostat down and still feel comfortable, you can save about £90 per year for each 1C˚reduction, according to the Energy Saving Trust. Most people set their thermostat at 18–21C˚.

Some people believe it’s cheaper to leave the heating on all day, but for a boiler system, it’s better to just have it in use when needed. If you have a timer on your thermostat, set it up to turn the heating on about 30 minutes before you normally get up and turn off half an hour before you go to bed, or at least set it to a lower temperature during the night. Moreover, if everyone is out of the house all day at work or school, you won’t need the heating on in the daytime.

Boilers also need regular servicing to ensure they’re operating efficiently. Xgas can provide a boiler service in Chester and other locations around the Wrexham area. Get in touch to also learn about care plans.
