Which? tests range of smart thermostats

Consumer champion Which? has published a review of 10 prominent smart thermostats.

Smart thermostats are much like programmable thermostats in that they enable you to use your heating more intelligently. This could include lowering the temperature at night, turning the heating off during the day when no one is in, and warming the home in the evening. Smart thermostats have more advanced features, though, such as learning your routine automatically. They may also allow you to control your heating remotely, such as if you forgot to turn it off before you left or want to turn it on as you head home.

In its testing methodology, Which? says it looked at ease of use in areas like installation, scheduling and adjustments, and connection to Wi-Fi networks. It also ran the tests in a temperature-controlled chamber to establish how accurately each thermostat measures room temperature and how quickly it reacts to drops in room temperature.

The review also considers security issues and features like the ability to control hot water and whether the thermostat supports boiler modulation, something that allows boilers to respond more smoothly to temperature changes. Which? members can view the test results on the Which? website.

Smart thermostats are just one of a range of potential options for saving money on energy bills.
